Description
Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid. It is a glycosaminoglycan and is used as a lubricating agent and a moisturizer in cosmetics. It is also used as a viscoelastic agent in ophthalmic surgeries.
Application
Sodium hyaluronate is used as a tissue lubricant and is thought to play an important role in modulating the interactions between adjacent tissues. It forms a viscoelastic solution in water. Mechanical protection for tissues (iris, retina) and cell layers (corneal, endothelium, and epithelium) are provided by the high viscosity of the solution. Sodium hyaluronate is used to treat knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. It is also used for the treatment of dry eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) and protecting eyes. Sodium hyaluronate strengthens and thickens skin, smooths lines and wrinkles, and deeply hydrates.
